Indication
Management of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones, chronic liver diseases (including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and cystic fibrosis-associated liver disease); may also aid in improving abnormal liver function tests.
Dosage
As directed by physician; typically 8–10 mg/kg body weight per day in divided doses, or 300 mg tablet 1–3 times daily, taken with food for best absorption.
Side Effects & Precautions
Mild gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain), rash, headache, rarely severe allergic reactions or worsening of liver tests.
Precautions: Contraindicated in complete biliary obstruction, allergy to bile acids, uncorrected severe hepatic impairment, pregnancy/breastfeeding unless advised, and children unless prescribed; regular liver function monitoring required.
